Chapter 19

The Last Round-up

THE LAZY SPRING SUN pokes its way across the florid faces of the diners well ensconced at Black Tom’s outside edge whilst the real money blokes partake of their specialities inside. They are the substantive members of the Fifth Estate whilst the ‘outsiders’ merely want to be seen by those driving by and those are so far outside they will never get to be ‘in’ in any event. But it is a pleasant sort of afternoon, just the right weather to stitch up a deal or two, pay off an informer or so or merely gossip about the failings of those around them. God’s in his Heavens and All’s Well.

Senseye wallows in his anti-oxidant as I contemplate him and his surroundings through a delicate cup of green tea. He is working his way towards saying something but an après lunch conversation with him is a chancy act at any time. However, it is clear that he is being moved to articulate some view or other. I will await. “After all this, I am not so sure that the Fifth Estate is the real problem, Terry.”
